Facebook About to Offer Personalized URLs

June 11th, 2009 Andreas Pfister

Starting on Saturday 12.01 a.m. EDT Facebook users can choose a personalized URL for their profile as announced on the Facebook Blog. That means that the URL which is visible in Search Engines will actually make sense and is not just an ID.

Of course Facebook isn’t doing anything new here but only offering what others already do. Profile URLs which contain a personalized user name have a long tradition on MySpace, Linkedin or Twitter. More and more Social Media sites appear on the Search Results Pages for personal search queries in Google, Yahoo & Co. nowadays and Facebook already has a fair share of voice. From a SEO and Reputation Management point of view these news are positiv because the integration of a user name in the URL might lead to higher page relevance, to more impressions and finally to a higher click trough rate (CTR) because of the prominent placement of the pseudonym.

To enjoy this little visibility boost you should reserve a good user name. The question is if you or your client can get the ones you like…

Because although it is geeky, I’m sure there are many people out there waiting for the countdown to finish.
